I knew it was over.

Tolerance it seemed is bound by necessity in life .The lack of need essentially means that people tolerate each other less look at the joint families collapsing into nuclear families further still the American way of life where the child is thrown out at 18. The more we have the less we are willing to compromise; relationships do not have the time to develop. It breaks with our exploding egos and the plethora of options and entertainment. The escape routes in today’s time are so many.

What are we but for our interactions with people. All thought is a response to interaction be it through books television chats etc. Few have ever been “independent” of thought what independent means is merely “own” viewpoint. What is a “self developed view point?” Its like a gardener he picks up various seeds from here and there dresses them in a particular way and then assumes the garden to be his own creation. At a micro level of the variation in design yes there is a so-called independence that’s the contribution of the gardener but it stops there. The gardener (that would be us) would be a great fool to think he is the independent of the basic nature of seeds. We as people are never independent of the social fabric the thoughts that we call our own are seeds we pick up here and there and dress them to suit us other not “so independent” don’t bother to redesign the garden for their convenience but opt for something similar to their neighbors. That’s the complete story of independence.

From here we need to move on to accepting that at the most we can “stand on the shoulders of giants” see the circus for ourselves. What happens when we assume a sense of independence? “My life” “My goals” “My ambition” “My car”’’“My view point” “the truth as I see it” “My choices”

Advertisers make money. “Choice” of self is the basis of the capitalist economy as if there is such a thing “independent choice..”. Choice as Marketers well know is a function of income, age group, Location and any number of factors in their cluster analysis and blah blah blah’Choice is highly over-rated. It is a much easier concept to understand and implement then empathy or tolerance. It has much less thought requirement or discipline than identifying a way of life that leads to greater fulfillment for all.

Incidentally choices are available only for people with economic freedom , for the rest it’s the wholesale market.Coming back to it was finally over the past 10 years growing up ..learning to be an independent woman.. choices of men of careers of sports and of clothes of theaters and movies and places to hang out “everything had its problems..Some men were ugly some clothes were ugly and some places too.. Other men were stupid other clothes ridiculous ”and still others unattainable I mean all men clothes places and sometimes it changed some men became pretty attainable like clothes and the taj’“My choice” still never satisfied me. Every thing had faults and pretty soon they became glaring enough or boring enough to prompt me to leave it. I could .. who wants to suffer the boredom of the forever whining or the forever busy or the I have had it for so long . It didn’t take too much effort to buy a new set clothes from the latest mall , or “patao” a new guy in college “. And yet in spite of so many choices ”“.Steve smith.. kamala das wrong choices.. How can we learn to live with our choices? The inevitably wrong choices ”the oh shit I am breaking up with this guy too ? “I don’t know if its possible today As ishita suggests maybe we should go around shooting our husbands if they are abusive and become independent”?

Oh yes they both reached for the gun(I happen to be listening to Chicago). Plato’s answer to miserable greeks was brainwashing children before they become a part of society. We could learn to brain wash ourselves into a state of bliss ..invariably the idea is to believe in happiness .More enlightened souls would vouch for action that maximize world brainwashing of state of happiness but in the long run we are all dead.

So I conclude with an understanding that the entire debate of independence hinges on brainwashing to believe that firstly there is such a thing as independence and secondly such an activity leads to greater happiness for self.The self Of course is dead in the long run unless the definition of self excludes dying.. “perpetual self”?
