It happened two nights ago. A mouse that had been troubling my parents had ultimately entered its man made prison.
We had placed a plastic bowl full of a transparent sticky glue and a cheese bait for a while and just when it was trapped, it so happened that I was the only one to get it out. The temperature outside was fifteen degrees negative and with the little thing in my hand at an unearthly hour of two past midnight, I howled my guts out--I couldn't get my self to chuck it coz it would not only freeze but also die a torturous death, slow and painful stuck in that clammy concoction. It was indeed quite a real life Tom and Jerry scene, one out of those friendship episodes and when I sat down to think over why one does such things to little creatures, I just came out with this.
The chuckle of the newborn for a mom is beautiful. The laugh on the same cartoon for the nth time is still funny. Every laugh carries with it, the hunger craved so long. There is happiness for the mouse to see his cheese, (something we take so for granted), even if it lies in the trap and would cost him his life. But what the heck, it is all that he seeks every moment and here it is. Likewise an ant finds a jackpot when a grain of wheat is seen nearby. She'd be half its size but would carry it all the way to share her fruit of joy with others.
Happiness - a word every one relates to. For a soldier in a war, it is a dream come true to live the next second. A baby smiles at the slightest twinkle it sees in an eye, the music of a toy; the rocking of a cradle get the child to gurgle up a nice chortle. Simple and short are man's basic desires. For a housewife; her heart thumps as the cake is slipping out of its mould but a specless one means, a day made. Mom's elated at her son's sneaky hug; a wife at her husband getting back on time and for him, wearing the tie knot just right in early in he morning, get him smiling to the person in the mirror. A new doll in its original transparent packing is less dear than an old one in pretty wrappers and ribbons for a schoolgirl and a chocolate fallen on mud still is a chocolate for the kid.
If every moment can be celebrated, why not? We feel them all the time but don't realize the abundance we live in, for in a day we experience so many happy hours. There is so much around us. Every step we take crushes a hundred ants .. they all have one life to live, which happens to be at our mercy at all times. Have you noticed two squirrels playing? There joy lies in the tug-o-war-nut and even if the nut were to fall, they'd have marked this day on the diary of their lives. There is elation in plucking a fruit from the tree. The fruit too is contented dying in someone's arms than falling dead to the soil. It achieves something by quenching a sweet hunger.
We more than often don't look into these unsealed joys of life but run for the moons. Someone had very rightly said, "Everyone aims for big things in life when it is made up of little- little things". We just let them pass like miles stones along a winding road. We don't realize the plenteous as a result we consider ourselves empty, our poor souls are thus unhappy. However if life is beautiful, it is so for everyone. A bird must die its own flight, a man shed his soul and a firefly must lose its own light. But one would rather die sure shot than live to suffer. No one has the right to torture or to inflict pain on others. Remove others from your life-cycle but not from theirs.
Everyone has his/her own fears, hopes and desires. They all have ambitions and wants. A moth lives only a night but spends that only with light. As I see the mouse lives only in a cheesy world, I realize that it is only our misfortune that we can't comprehend their lingo and let them all be. May be they deem us unworthy of understanding them but you know, if for once you think of your self as the same mouse, you will have your spine shiver. Try releasing a mouse from the trap, offer it a piece of cheese and let it go - you'll actually feel the crave for life in every little living thing around you. Life is the elixir of god for everyone and life is equally lovely for you, me, the mouse and x, y, zee. A beating heart is dear to every soul. Life is a string, which holds the beads of joy together to form a halo that glows every being.
With the dawn of a new era infuse yourself with newer, lighter thoughts. Remember tinge of joy lies in everything even in turning forty and an being able to put your laces right, in remembering the days school when you went with an open fly; your pup tearing your bathroom slippers, a sparrow pecking your kitchen window for a grain or two and even in a mouse sleeping soundly behind your bed.
What stayed with you?
A line that lingered, a feeling, a disagreement. Great comments are as valuable as the original piece.
