Guys - Judges of Character
When my best friend fell heads over heels with a bird-brain beauty, I really began to wonder if guys were bad judges of character after all. *A must read*
“Hello, Mr.Loverboy, are you still alive?”
I waved my hand in front of my best friend’s dumb-struck face. His eyes practically protruded out from their sockets as he gazed mystified at the girl standing at the door.
“Shut up Sim! And move your hand away!”
I smiled to myself. Guys are so typical! I followed his gaze and saw a familiar figure at the classroom door. Sahiba.
“I see, she’s the new girl in school”, I thought to myself.
“What could possibly be this goddess’s name?”
I giggled. I wished I had a camera, so that I could just capture that dumb expression on his handsome face.
“Sahiba”, I volunteered.
He stared at me. His jaw dropped down.
“You friggin girl, you know her NAME?”
I nodded.
“Yea, you dork, she lives two blocks away from me and she’s”.“
”Say no more, you just have to get us two together. My life is in your hands Sim“
I didn’t know if he was kidding with the dramatic expressions or was he really serious. Sahiba? Like really! Sure ” she had the to-die-for figure and her neckline and skirt length far surpassed the limits of an ideal uniform, but she was the dumbest bird on planet Earth. She could barely manage to spell her name right! And my best friend, actually wanted to go out with “ HER?
”Vivek, she’s a twerp. She’s really dumb and highly lacks common sense. I’ve known her for years. She’s not your type dude!’That’s when I realized he wasn’t even hearing. His eyeballs followed her as she catwalked to an empty chair. I reverted back to my books. After all, its hopeless, guys are such poor judges of characters.
The following days he bought me chocolates and begged me to get them introduced. Even though I explaint time and again, he was adamant that he just had to talk to her. So giving in finally, I invited her over to my house on the following Saturday giving her an excuse of my birthday party even though my birthday was five months away! Of course, a party required more guests and I managed to convince a few more people to join us promising them a nice get-together if not anything else to look forward to.Vivek reached earliest. Sahiba was the last to arrive. So I did what I promised to do — the usual Sahiba this is Vivek and Vivek this is Sahiba routine. From there, Vivek took off. From far off I could see him chatting endlessly as she just sat there nodding her head and sporadically smiling.
The days that followed, he agreed she was dumb.
“But she’s so goddamn gorgeous Sim! One look at her and my heart does a triple somersault. I don’t care if she’s dumb. She’s got the looks man!”
“Really Vivek, guys are such bad judges of character!”
He was absolutely star-struck. Now came the hard part “ he wanted to propose her. ”Sim, you just gotta help me girl, you’re my only passport to heaven. Cmon man, just convince her to see me alone, and I’ll do the works“
”I don’t know Vivek, she’s not your type. You can get smarter girls you know. She’s really not it!“
”You’re my best friend bud, just help me this once, please please please?’
So fine, I convinced her to meet him at McDonalds and resolved to be there myself to see the outcome of this rendezvous.
So there I was, sitting six tables away from Vivek, who was totally unaware of my presence. Sahiba arrived twenty minutes later than the decided time. I had expected it all along. Guys are such bad judges of characters really.
Vivek’s lap gave shelter to a single rose. She sat there with a plastic smile plastered to her face. As they talked, I saw her opening up to Vivek. They sat there for about two hours and I was feeling rather weird sitting there by myself. I felt guilty for not wanting Vivek to go out with her. He liked her, and she probably wasn’t half as bad as I thought. Maybe I was jealous. I didn’t really know.
What hit me was the fact that Vivek didn’t give her the rose. They bid goodbye to each other and I saw Sahiba leaving. Vivek rose from his chair thereafter and I looked away. I didn’t want him to know I was snooping around. He’d probably tell me everything himself on the phone or something.
Suddenly, I saw him heading in my direction. I felt embarrassed. What would he say? Will he scold me for being there? How long had he known I was there?
“Sim?”
I rose.
“I’m sorry, I just thought I’d come here and see what she would say. Her reaction I mean. I didn’t think you would mind. I didn’t even think you would know. I am really sorry. Really”“
Suddenly, he smiled. I was taken aback. Why was this freak smiling? He should be screaming, shouting, cribbing. Anything ” but smiling.
He brought out the rose from behind his back and offered it to me “ ”I love you, Sim“
Like I said ” guys are really good judges of character”
What stayed with you?
A line that lingered, a feeling, a disagreement. Great comments are as valuable as the original piece.
