A thought.....
Just a droplet from my life.....It can be said like "A bitter sweet symphony"
Man always had a tendency to break his boundations and explore the world that lies outside the unseen but which can be felt space in which he lives. When a child is unborn he has a want to come out from his mother’s womb and then slowly and gradually after breaking or going with the rules while living in his small bubble grows up into a person who can understand what is right for him. He grows with some dream according to his upbringing like whatever he has faced in his life and what path he wants to follow throughout his life so that firstly he can serve his family well and then according to his desires whom else he wants to serve.
Most of the children while doing there schooling live in a restricted environment as in India, we can say either the culture is like this or generally people live in small towns so they are like restrained to a small area in which there living so they can’t even think of going out to explore whatever they want to due to the responsibilities of their families. So they expect that there children can atleast get out of the small space in which they are living to a complete and real world.
While studying in schools most of the students dream about getting to an institution which can help them to explore the new world which lies outside there bubble and which can provide you a space which is yours and which is without any boundations and restrictions. So getting into such kind of place which will be like a mirror of the world which will give you a space in which you can grow into a man who knows what he wants to do and how he can do that needs lot of efforts and encouragement from one’s family. For students who want to get into a technical field IIT’s are considered to be the Mecca of education in this stream. When there are thousands of other collages which again put you into another restricted environment if one hears that you can get a new and more remarkably your own world in IIT’s then one dreams about getting into IIT.
When after such a long series of troubles and pains one gets a call from IIT he thinks that he is on seventh sky and says to himself that now you can fulfill all your dreams but he doesn’t know that it is the starting of a new dilemma. When he is at his first stage of getting into IIT system which is totally unknown to him, his first interaction is with the counselors who try to help him in god knows what kind of ways that the a student who is totally new to this system is more confused that which branch to take or by taking which stream he can achieve his goals. Now this is the more crucial stage which will decide what will be the future like for him. Moreover like all fingers are not equal, all IIT’s are also not the same. They have there own rules and regulations but these things are not clear to a student that whether he can survive in such kind of environment (we have left the part where we were talking about growth of student far back). So after long discussions with the people who are mostly confusing one gets into IIT with some stream about which he doesn’t know anything unless he is a student who’s some near or dear is related to IIT (most of the students have never even heard of some branches which IIT’s offer earlier but after superior counseling gets into these branches and there are quite a few whose near and dear one’s are related to IIT).Till now everyone is happy that the child got an admission in top most institute of India or rather World and so is the student. Slowly and gradually he knows the system by getting into it.
Now his second encounter with the system is when he is allotted a hostel, where there is a healthy interaction first with the warden and then with the senior residents of that hostel. Hostel is a place where one gets an idea how tough can be a world where he is alone without his parents, without any restrictions or boundations, where there is no one to look after him and that time one can also choose a wrong path. Since interaction is banned in IIT system these days which is not in favour to the students who are new rather it is in favour to the seniors so that they don’t have to waste time with juniors to make them understand how they have to adjust to this new system in which they can just feel lost if they don’t know how to manage things i.e. the art of balancing life with the dreams they had. Authorities as well as the parents of the newcomers think that the students living in hostels are either terrorists or some kind of freaks who have nothing to do rather they are wasting there time but no one listens to the point of view of 3000 people who are bound in this system but the say is of some such people who never passed through such phase or who never studied in IIT system (makers are never followers). There should be common rules and facilities for everybody who is studying in IIT and if it’s same for all then how come some hostels have single rooms for first yearites and in others two are living in a single room, is this some kind of discrimination.
Third encounter which is directly to the makers of the system is when a student who thinks that he can also study in IIT if he does not have a good financial background. In such instances whoever can play a better fool to the system by hook or crook can raise funds for his studies but for a newcomer who do not know anything about the expenses that he or his family has to bear while studying in IIT with such a massive fee structure can also fail to get a grant or scholarship for studying here if he is not having anyone near or dear who is related to IIT system. Quite awkward questions are put up against you when you are facing a panel of system makers that how can you prove besides your fathers income affidavit that you are unable to pay the fees or like are you really poor, how can one say when so he is coming from a family where he has been taught the lesson of gairatmandi. So he thinks that what if he is not getting a grant he’ll try to earn by doing some part time job or something like that but then also IIT system does not allow him to do so as he has to comply with the rules of the system of classes which he has to attend. (If I am not mistaken then there is a misconception among people outside IIT that there are no such rules which bound students from growing up like those which are in normal engineering colleges)
Fourth encounter which is the most dangerous one and which can lead you to enjoy the IIT life for some more time is the Disciplinary Committee (DISCO). Now if one is caught in cheating case without consulting a psychiatrist first directly he is directly given the punishment whether he is at fault or not. At least a psychiatrist can tell under what circumstances one went through such demotivating and declining act like cheating, if given a punishment what are the outputs of that and it can also give us some remedies to the problem in future. There are also some other kinds of disciplinary actions like teasing and commenting on someone which are essential but if some actions can be turned to some useful works rather just putting up a fine on a student which is not a fine to him but to his parents is rubbish. IIT takes in cream of the nation not to churn this cream and take out some good part out of the intake but to heat this cream and take out the best in which everyone is equally good.
I think I’ll continue with my thoughts in the next article because I want to be realistic and if I’ll be such a person I’ll hurt some of the high hopers, so I’ll conclude here. Thanks for reading my views. Do comment if you think that it’s a voice of a loser because I feel like I am one.
What stayed with you?
A line that lingered, a feeling, a disagreement. Great comments are as valuable as the original piece.
