Evanescence

He couldn't help but think it odd, that a name could remind him of the past.

Every key on the piano pulled a different memory of her. As the woman sang of a relationship that ended too slowly, he thought of one that ended too quickly. His mind fogged over, and he had no grip on his surroundings. Three years still hadn't been long enough.

The plastic cd case fogged with sweat from his hands. He stared at the cover and contemplated the band's name. He couldn't help but think it odd, that a name could remind him of the past.

Evanescence, means dissipation, like vapor. Thinking back, that is exactly what happened between them- evanescence. Like vapor, something he thought was so real vanished as quickly as it came.

His memories of the good times, also seemed to become more and more transparent. Yet the pain of her loss, seemed more solid with every year. He still thinks of her atleast once a day, and sometimes like today, without his will.

From the moment the womans voice carried over him, he felt her ghost at his side. He tries to push it away, but it reaches to him. Too tired to push any longer he reaches for her, and reaches through the illusion like vapor. She is gone again.

The rhythem of the piano slows, and his stomach is in knots. The song ends, and the agony that is left inside him is hard and cold like a stone. The pain does not dissipate, there is no evanescence. He wishes her ghost would leave, and curses the song for returning it to him.

Without knowing why, he plays it again.

What stayed with you?

A line that lingered, a feeling, a disagreement. Great comments are as valuable as the original piece.
