CORRUPTION POTENTIAL -IDENTIFY,SEGREGATE AND NULLIFY
Corruption is a disease of the society. The way we fight the disease ourselves either by taking a medicine when already inflicted with it or vaccination as a prevention, we should similarly react to corruption with the same seriousness and alertness
This is highly contagious in nature. By avoiding it we can not stop its escalation. We should face it and join our hands together to eradicate corruption through our united effort. At the same time, we should keep in our mind that nobody is corrupted by birth. It is the surroundings, which change the person’s nature during his development. But, still it's also true that despite having been brought up under the similar surroundings someone may acquire qualities totally different from others. That’s why we human being are possessing diverse characteristics. In addition to the surroundings, it is one’s inner-self which contributes substantially to one's development. There are different types of corrupted persons. It will be improper if all of them are grouped in one broad group and handled with common tools. So they should be identified by a measure of corruptibility and the application of that ability to commit corrupt practices of different magnitudes. The measures also should be different for different groups for success in our efforts to build an honest society. An effort is made to classify the corrupted personalities into three different groups on the basis of their potential for corruption. These are (1) High potential (2) Corruption under compulsion (3) Opportunity activated potential.
A) High Potential: This type of persons easily get attracted to corrupted practices. They always keep themselves ready for launching into the kingdom of corruption. They are generally intelligent and possess sharp acumen. They use these skills in order to have success in their illegal activities. Because of their uncontrolled involvement in corruption, it becomes nearly impossible for them to hide their activities. Their surreptitious activities become open secret to all the employees of the concerned office, if not the total organization. Despite that they do not care anybody and run an aggressive corrupted life. It’s the nature and the thinking of the individual, which changes their lifestyle. They make their priority list in such way that for them the number one priority is to earn money, at whatever cost it may be. Honesty, integrity, ethics, fairness in dealings are only dictionary words for them. These should not be a hindrance to their so-called success.
B) Corruption under Compulsion: People of this category are basically not corrupted by virtue. They join the group on temporary basis with a target. Once they achieve that target they return to the normal life and as usual start hating, criticizing the corruption along with others. Generally, these types of persons resort to corruption under a compulsion. This compulsion can be of different nature like, sudden requirement of money which might change their lifestyle, pressure from his boss, frustration, unable to maintain bad habit (which require excessive expenses) or status in the society etc. These people are generally weak hearted. They feel guilty of their wrongdoing. They try to resist themselves from committing any misdoing, but succumb to that due to lack of determination and self-possession. They might have some priorities in their life but all get changed by the influence of dominant outside factors which misguide them and they surrender to that like a vehicle without steering and brake.
C) Opportunity Activated Potential: This group of people is very peculiar in nature. They fear to get involved in a corruption case. They fear the society. They think if they are found guilty of any illegal activity they would not be able to live in society along with others. Because of this fear only, they generally refrain from corrupted practices. But, at the same time they feel the attraction of easy-earned-money through corruption. So, if they find an opportunity where the risk of getting caught is nearly NIL they do not allow the opportunity to go waste. They fall into the trap of low risk high profit corruption. If they find such chances more in number they get more and more confidence and ultimately shift over to “A” group i.e. high potential group. This group wants to lead a normal social life like any other honest citizen. Though, in their priority list honesty might have a slight edge over dishonesty (due to the involvement of risk) but they can not resist the call of corruption when they find that safe and risk-free and proceed with consolations - “the whole world is corrupted, my all seniors are corrupted”. there is nothing wrong if I forget honesty for a moment only..... however, I am not going to dispose my honesty permanently” ..etc.
First group, though, can be categorized as incorrigible group but the percentage of them is very low. They are already amidst corruption. They should never be posted in a position which may help them to proliferate their illegal activities. They can be tackled very easily if we decide to drive off these elements and cooperate with management to gather sufficient proof of their crimes. Strong punitive action against them is the only solution to convey signals to other high potential corrupted employees in order to control their illegal activities.
Second and third groups are the individuals, who might have already been trapped in corruption case or already committed corrupt practices but not caught or may get involved any time in future. In fact, they are the majority in any organization. Preventive actions are the best methods to reverse their bad intention and bring them back to the right track. Surprise inspections not only by the vigilance department but very much by the department heads or the location in-charges and modification of the existing methods to nullify the possibilities of any help from the system/practices towards misuse, can help the management to resist the involvement of majority of the above group members from committing any abuses of the system. Above all, the awareness about the positive sides of the corruption-free society, the dark sides of corrupted society and the importance of being vigilant in every step is the solution for achieving a corruption-free, honest society.
